2:Competition Area

  • Minami Hiroba (Nisi 3, Minami 9, Nayoro City) An open space
    in the center of Nayoro, where many events are often held.

3:Eligibility

  • Only 10 teams can participate. Should more than 10 teams apply,the organizer reserves the right to determine which teams will participate.
  • One (1) team will be accepted from each country or region in accordance with their nation's snow sculpting organization.
  • Teams from foreign countries that are not represented by their national snow sculpting organization must attain official representation from either their national snow sculpting organization or ministry of culture or some other official body.
  • Each team member must have the nationality of the country they represent.
  • Teams from Japan will be selected by the organizer. /li>
  • Each team will consist of three (3) sculptors.
  • Excluding student teams, at least two (2) of the three (3) sculptors must be professional.
  • Sculptors must be 18 years of age or over.

4. Competition Rules and Tools

  • Each team will be provided with a block of snow, measuring 3m×3m×3m.
  • Only the original volume of snow may be utilized.
  • The team can extend their snow block on 4 sides to a maximum 50cm, and on the top by up to 1m.
  • The sculpture must be made only of snow.
  • Water or other materials are not allowed to be used.
  • Reinforcement or support inside/outside of the sculpture is
    not permitted.
  • Use of electrical machinery is forbidden.
  • The organizer will provide each team with 3 snow shovels, one ladder, one set of scaffolds.
  • The competitors must bring their own tools for sculpting and trimming.
  • Before judging, the competitors should remove all the tools and remaining snow around the sculpture.
  • All the tools and unused snow should be taken care of by the competitors.
  • The block of snow shall be used entirely and be sculpted on all 4 sides.
  • It is not permitted to change the plans of the sculpture that the competitors proposed when they applied.
  • The competition will take place regardless of weather conditions.
  • The competition starts Tuesday, Feb. 7th at 10:00am and ends Friday, Feb.10th at 2:00pm.
  • The team members cannot be changed once the competition begins.
  • The team leader should be determined when they apply.
  • The organizer reserves the rights to publish photos or films of the sculptures. If it publishes them, the name of the sculptors will be used with their works.

6. Representative council

  • The representative council is comprised of team leaders from
    each team.
  • The chairman of the representative council is from the organizer.
  • Any rule changes will always be made by the representative council.

7. Climate/Temperature

  • Low humidity in winter.
  • The temperature varies from about ― 5℃ to ―25℃.

8. Snow

  • Natural snow Very fine, very high quality.

9. Responsibility

  • Each participant must have medical insurance.。
  • The organizer is not responsible for any injuries during competition.
  • Any infraction of the regulations by a member may lead to the teamユs disqualification. The representative council will make the final decision.
  • The organizer is not responsible for any theft, loss, or damage to the competitorユs property.

10. Jury

  • Each member of the Jury has artistic qualifications.
  • The Jury will consider the following criteria in making their decision: Amount of used snow,originality/creativity, technique/craftsmanship,sculptureユs overall impression
  • Only completed sculptures are eligible to be judged.
  • For safety reasons, the immediate surrounding area of the sculpture will be off-limits; therefore judging will be based only on the appearance of the sculpture.
  • If tools or remaining snow are not removed, points will be deducted at the time of judging.
  • The completed sculptures are required to be in good and stable condition for two days under the changeable weather, such as warmer daytime temperatures and blizzards.

11. Prizes

  • first/second /third prize.
  • One artistsユ choice prize.
  • Publicユs choice prize.
  • All participants shall receive a commemorative souvenir from Nayoro.

12. Expenses

  • The organizer will provide 5 free nights accommodation and breakfasts in Nayoro from Feb.6th to Feb.10th.
  • The sponsors will offer meals during the competition
  • Participants have to pay for extra nights if they need to stay longer plus whatever meals are not provided.
  • Sponsors will award 60000yen per competitor. (Which means each overseas team will be awarded 180000yen). This money will be paid out after the registrations are completed in Nayoro.
  • Please note that these expenses should be used for your airfare, transportation, as well as the cost of your meals during the competition.
  • Breakfast will be served throughout the competition by the organizers. Sponsors of the event may possibly provide lunch and dinner. However, if none is provided, you will need to acquire your own meals.
  • Please be responsible for yourself if you are a vegetarian or have allergic reactions to any food.
  • Expenses will be paid after registrations are completed.

13. Deadline for Applications

All the required documents must be received by December 5th 2011.

  • Application Form
  • The resume of each team member
  • Drawings of the 4 dimensions of the proposed sculpture.
  • Title of the sculpture
  • A verbal description of the sculpture and theme
  • Written confirmation that the proposed sculpture has never before been realized in snow.
